Understanding Students with Autism and Stress
Presented by Kym Hume, Autism Atlantic Consulting Services
As administrators, we often interact throughout the school day with students who have autism. These students experience a significant level of anxiety and frustration which often leads to behaviours that frequently require the involvement of an administrator. The student with autism may experience such intense overwhelming emotions that they become highly dysregulated and enter the flight, fight, or freeze response. How we respond effectively depends on several factors under our control.
In this webinar, we will look at the critical traits of ASD that administrators need to understand and how those traits contribute to stress and anxiety. We will also examine the anxiety curve and specific strategies to employ when administrators are faced with intense, stress-related behaviours that students with ASD demonstrate under duress in the school environment.
